“Save Humans … Save Africa” Campaign
To stop the individual Ethiopian dealing on the Renaissance Dam.
And the joining of the former Minister of Social Work in Burkina Faso to the campaign.
The National Association for the Defense of Rights and Freedoms and the Al-Haq Foundation for Freedom of Opinion and Expression and Human Rights announced the launch of a campaign called “Save Humans … Save Africa”, which aims to protect the lives of the people of Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia by mobilizing African organizations. In order to pressure decision-makers in Egypt, Sudan and Africa to continue the tripartite negotiations on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, and not to take any individual measures that contribute to the collapse of political negotiations between the three countries.
In its letter to the African organizations, the Assembly indicated that the situation has become more dangerous than before, especially in light of Ethiopia’s insistence on not completing the tripartite negotiations on the one hand and in terms of the military skirmishes on the Ethiopian-Sudanese borders.
In their letter to the African organizations, the association and the Foundation demanded that they sign a petition to be submitted to the African Union, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the heads of parliaments in the three countries and their foreign ministers. The petition includes a number of demands, the most important of which are
1. The need to protect the right of citizens of Egypt and Sudan to life and not to expose them to danger
2. The necessity to ensure that the two downstream countries are not exposed to the risk of desertification and water scarcity and to protect the rights of their citizens to have access to drinking water and their right to food.
3. The commitment of the states parties to the international mechanisms for settling political disputes and not resorting to military solutions or hinting at them
4. An immediate cessation of military skirmishes between the states of Ethiopia and Sudan on the border strip between them
5. The supervision of the African Union and the United Nations on the tripartite negotiations.
6. Preparing technical studies by offices of experts to be agreed upon with the knowledge of the African Union and the United Nations to express an opinion on the extent to which the two downstream countries are exposed to risks from nothing.
The campaign also affirms the demand of the State of Ethiopia not to take any unilateral measures that would disrupt negotiations between the three countries and to abide by that legally in a written agreement signed by all parties. It is worth noting that Mrs. Maryam Lamizana, former Minister of Social Work and Solidarity in Burkina Faso, was one of the first figures. People in Africa who joined the campaign.
