Launching the “Women’s Digital Safety Charter” from the “Grandma Amina” Platform

On the morning of November 25, 2025, as the world was illuminated in orange to mark the start of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, women from across the Arab world united under one umbrella: the “Grandma Amina” platform of the National Association for the Defense of Rights and Freedoms. This was no ordinary morning; it brought with it a long-awaited and significant announcement: the launch of the “Women’s Digital Safety Charter,” the first document of its kind in the Arab world aimed at reshaping the digital space to become a safer and more just place for women.

The idea stemmed from a reality all too familiar to women: anonymous messages carrying threats, images taken out of context to harm them, hurtful words written with impunity, and accounts operating in the shadows to silence women’s voices simply trying to live, express themselves, and be themselves. This reality prompted the platform to declare unequivocally: “It’s time to change the rules of the game.” And so the Charter was born… Twenty articles that didn’t emerge from a vacuum, but were forged from years of experience and the courage of women who decided to transform pain into tools of protection, fear into knowledge, and silence into collective strength. The Charter lays out clear principles for digital self-protection, reaffirms feminist solidarity as the primary safety net, and calls for collective responsibility that obligates platforms and society to confront hate speech and online violence.

With the rise of digital violence patterns that transcend geographical boundaries, an initiative emerged to form an Arab alliance comprising human rights and feminist organizations from multiple countries. Its aim is to ensure that women are not left alone to face invisible attacks that leave deep scars on their daily lives and digital presence. The alliance will launch simultaneous awareness campaigns, publish guidance materials for women, and open the Charter for public and institutional signatures in support of its principles. In a statement at the launch, Habiba Mazen, head of the Grandma Amina platform, said:

“This charter is not just a document; it’s a collective step to redefine digital safety from a feminist perspective. Today, we declare that online spaces are not arenas for violence or impunity, but spaces where women’s voices and dignity must be respected.”

As the first day of the campaign concluded, the Grandma Amina platform reaffirmed its message, inspired by the spirit of “Grandma Amina”:

“Women deserve safety… online as well as in real life. And if virtual spaces are vast, women’s solidarity is even broader, capable of protecting them, confronting violence, and amplifying their voices instead of silencing them.”

The Grandma Amina platform invites all interested parties, media outlets, and civil society organizations to share the charter and support the 16 Days of Activism campaign, which runs until December 10 – International Human Rights Day – and to contribute to building a digital space that respects women’s presence and rights. #Women’s_Digital_Safety_Charter
