Protecting Egyptian Women: A Legal and Societal Duty

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8, the National Association for the Defense of Rights and Freedoms affirms its deep appreciation for Egyptian women and their pivotal role in building society, preserving its stability, and actively contributing to the development process and public service. Throughout history, Egyptian women have demonstrated their resilience, generosity, and sense of responsibility, and have always been essential partners in protecting society and preserving its human values. The Association emphasizes that celebrating International Women’s Day should not be limited to symbolic appreciation, but should be a genuine occasion to renew the commitment to protecting women’s rights, enhancing their status, and ensuring their full enjoyment of all rights and freedoms without discrimination. Women have the full right to live in dignity and safety in an environment free from violence, harassment, and discrimination. Protecting them and preserving their dignity is a legal and moral obligation incumbent upon both the state and society. The Association notes that many women still face real challenges related to societal violence, harassment, and discrimination in some areas, which necessitates serious work to strengthen legal protection mechanisms, activate the rule of law, and intensify community awareness efforts. The culture of respect, equality, and zero tolerance for any form of violence against women must be firmly established. The strength and resilience of Egyptian women should not be a justification for leaving them to face challenges alone. Rather, it must be met with a clear commitment from state and societal institutions to provide a safe environment that respects women’s rights, guarantees their full protection, and ensures their equitable participation in all aspects of life. The National Association for the Defense of Rights and Freedoms affirms that building a just and stable society begins with respecting women’s rights and guaranteeing their security and dignity. Women’s rights are not a sectarian issue but an integral part of the human rights system and a cornerstone of achieving social justice and sustainable development. On this day, the Association renews its call for concerted efforts among state institutions, civil society, media outlets, and educational institutions to promote a culture of human rights and entrench the values of respect and equality, thus guaranteeing Egyptian women a safe and dignified life free from violence and discrimination.
