Urgent Human Rights Appeal to Protect Al-Bawaba News Journalists and Guarantee Their Professional Rights
The National Association for the Defense of Rights and Freedoms is following with grave concern the complex professional and living conditions faced by journalists at Al-Bawaba News, which have directly impacted their job security and fundamental rights as an integral part of the Egyptian media system and a key pillar of society’s right to know and freedom of information.
The situation these journalists are facing necessitates urgent institutional intervention by the Supreme Council for Media Regulation to guarantee the protection of their professional and legal rights and to develop practical solutions that address the crisis and embody the state’s responsibility to provide a stable and fair media environment.
The Association emphasizes that respecting employment contracts, safeguarding financial and administrative rights, and providing fair professional guarantees for journalists are not merely sectoral demands, but fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution and the law. These rights form the basis for responsible and independent media practice that preserves society’s right to a professional, free, and effective media.
The Association stresses that the Journalists Syndicate, as the legitimate professional umbrella for journalists, represents a fundamental pillar in defending their rights and professional interests, and that its role in this crisis has become an urgent necessity. Opening direct channels of communication with journalists, intervening immediately to resolve the situation, providing necessary legal and professional support, and pushing all parties towards fair and sustainable solutions.
The association calls on the Supreme Council for Media Regulation and the Journalists Syndicate to urgently coordinate efforts to listen to the legitimate demands of journalists and take the necessary measures to ensure the proper application of professional justice standards and activate the oversight and regulatory roles that protect journalists’ rights, as they are the cornerstone of the media industry. It also calls on the relevant authorities to quickly reach a settlement that guarantees full rights, restores confidence in the journalistic work environment, and affirms the state’s commitment to the rule of law and the protection of professional rights and freedoms.
